Repair Teeth with Dental Crowns
At Forcioli Family Dentistry, our goal is to provide dental solutions for missing or damaged teeth that look and feel like your natural teeth. We can create new crowns or replace existing damaged crowns with new restorations that transform your smile and allow you to eat or drink anything without worry.
What is a Dental Crown?
A porcelain crown is an excellent option when a tooth is damaged beyond repair. A dental crown is essentially a cap placed over a damaged tooth or a post implanted in the jaw. The crown replaces or completely protects the damaged tooth and restores normal function. A dental crown’s size, shape, and appearance are nearly identical to that of a healthy tooth. It is cemented into place or attached to an implant for long term stability.
At Forcioli Family Dentistry, we individually fabricate each crown so it is customized to your specific tooth and oral health care needs. Dr. Forcioli only works with local labs in Illinois to recreate the beauty and natural function of the original tooth. Crowns can replace missing teeth or cover damaged teeth depending on the severity of the problem. Our expertise and the latest in dental crown technology allow us to provide you with the highest quality porcelain crowns that can last decades if properly cared for, which is as close to permanent as dental treatment can get.
What are the Benefits of Dental Crowns?
- Replaces missing teeth
- Offers support to misshapen teeth or badly broken teeth
- Looks completely natural
- Fixes “smile” and functional chewing problems
- Can last decades if properly cared for
- It doesn’t have to be removed for cleaning like a full or partial denture
The Dental Crown Fitting Process
You will need two trips to Forcioli Family Dentistry to get a dental crown. We remove any decay during the first visit and shape the tooth to receive the porcelain crown. The tooth is filed down on top, and the sides are narrowed to make room for the new crown. We make an impression of the tooth, which is used to create a properly fitting porcelain crown. This usually takes a couple weeks. We will use a temporary crown made of acrylic to protect the area during this time. On your next visit, we’ll remove the temporary crown and attach the final crown, making adjustments if needed. Once the fit is perfect, we will cement the crown in place.
How Do I Care for My Dental Crowns?
Once the permanent crowns are in place, care for them as you do your natural teeth. Brush at least twice a day, floss nightly, and be sure to take special care along the gum line. Don’t chew on ice, popcorn hulls, or other hard objects to avoid cracking the crown. Don’t rip open packages with your teeth or try to use your teeth to pry open a container.
