How to Teach Your Kids Proper Brushing and Flossing Techniques for a Healthy Smile

By the time your child is 6-9 years old, they can brush their own teeth, but you will need to supervise them carefully until they get the hang of it. You also need to demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques and check to make sure they haven’t missed any teeth. You can also set a good example by making sure they see you brushing and flossing every day.

Your child must brush their teeth for at least two minutes every time. Setting a timer or playing one of their favorite songs when they brush will help. Brushing at the same time as your child does can make it a bonding experience. Don’t be afraid to dance around a bit while brushing.

Let your child pick out their own toothbrush. Make sure it is child-sized, with a shorter grip and smaller head, so it is easy to use and comfortable in their mouth. Soft bristles are best to avoid irritating the gums.

Demonstrate Proper Brushing Technique

No matter how long your child brushes their teeth, it won’t help without the proper technique. Repeat the following steps with them until they have developed a habit of brushing properly:

  • Put a small (pea-size) amount of toothpaste on the brush.
  • Place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line at the base of the teeth.
  • Brush from the gum line up to the top of the tooth.
  • When brushing the back teeth, use short, circular strokes.
  • Use sweeping strokes on chewing surfaces, especially molars
  • Brush all surfaces of all teeth every time.
  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue and the roof of the mouth.

Proper Use of Dental Floss

Once your child has adjusted to brushing properly and they have teeth that are close together, introduce dental flossing to their routine. Flossing should be done daily to remove trapped food debris between their teeth.

  • Show them what 18 inches of dental floss looks like so they have sufficient floss for the job without wasting too much of it or have too little.
  • Demonstrate how to wrap the floss around a finger on each hand, leaving a short section pulled taut in between for flossing.
  • Show them how to slide the floss up and down between the teeth to loosen debris, bending it into a “C” shape to get under the gums.
  • Demonstrate how to unwind a fresh section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth.
  • If your child has trouble with traditional dental floss, try letting them use floss picks, which are easier to use and don’t require as much fine motor skills.
  • If you choose flavored dental floss, your child may be more willing to floss. Waxed floss may also be gentler on their gums.
